STAFF VOLUNTEER INFORMATION

1.         What is expected from a Staff Volunteer?

You are expected to abide by the rules stated in the Agreement that you have signed and to work in a professional manner expected by any person in this profession.  The board and management will not accept any breaking or bending of the rules in the Agreement.  A Good role model is what you are expected to be.

2.        Accommodation

·          Volunteer House

·          Rector’s guest house

Accommodation is provided on campus as part of the “Staff Volunteer Package”.  Male and female staff lives in separate areas.  Depending on numbers of males and females recruited, accommodation will be either single or shared.  Each area has its own toilet and shower facilities.  Both apartments are fitted with a kettle, crockery and cutlery, ironing board and iron, beds, linen, heater for the cold season.  The Volunteer house is further fitted with a stove with an oven, a fridge, washing machine and dryer, pots and pans. All guests must be authorized by the Volunteer Coordinator and Rector in advance; staff will be notified so that visitors are recognized around campus.

3.         Visa Requirements

Depending on which country you come from, you will require a Visitor’s Visa with a specification of Voluntary Service.  This also depends on the length of your stay in South Africa.  Tiger Kloof will provide you with an invitation letter detailing your reasons of application and duration of stay.  This will be sent out to you with your Staff Volunteer Contract.

4.         Bank Accounts

As long as your card has a Visa or Master Card sign on it, you are able to withdraw money from any ATM.  You will receive an amount of R1000-00 which will be your pocket money for every month you are at Tiger Kloof.  This amount will be paid to you in cash from the Finance Office, and will be your responsibility to ensure that it is either deposited into your own account, or left in an account at the finance office, and you may withdraw it as you wish.

5.         Vaccinations.

Check with your own doctor regarding vaccinations required to visit South Africa.  Vryburg is not in a malaria infected area, but if you will be visiting areas towards the north, during the school holidays, you might need malaria vaccination.

6.         Medical Insurance

Vryburg has doctors of high quality, in case you might need medical attention.  However it is your responsibility to ensure that you take out a medical insurance cover.  Regarding any medical emergencies, Mrs. Jacquie Habberton is the person who will make arrangements for you.  Her contact number is:  0845801533

7.         Food

All meals are provided as part of the package in the dining hall.  The only times meals are not provided are on leave weekends and during holidays.  The volunteer house has sufficient facilities to cook your own meals during these times.  Vryburg has three main supermarkets where you can get most ingredients to satisfy your appetite to cook.

8.         Water

The water from the taps is drinkable.

9.         Laundry

A washing machine is available in the volunteer house.  Ironing facilities are also supplied.  Ensure that you use optimum loads as not to waste electricity.  You will have to do your own laundry and ironing.  Requesting the cleaners to do your laundry whether during or after hours is prohibited.

10.       Getting Around

Tiger Kloof is situated 12 km from Vryburg therefore transport into town can be a problem.  There are several staff living on campus with transport who are usually happy to give lifts if room permits.  You can also go into town with the school driver who does two trips a day, one in the morning around 10:00 and another trip in the afternoon around 14h00.  Make sure that you book a seat, by informing the Finance Manager about your intention of going into town.  Also bear in mind that your trips into town do not take place at the same time when you have activities.  For your first trip into town you will be escorted by the Volunteer Coordinator or a member of staff recommended by the Volunteer Coordinator.  The reason behind this is to show you where are the best places to go for whatever it is that you might need and to point out to you which areas are “off zones”. If it happens that a staff member offers you their vehicle, please be aware that whatever agreements you make with the owner it will not be the school's responsibility, if the vehicle is damaged, whether in an accident or not.  Preferably you should use the transport provided by the school.

11.       Job descriptions

Volunteers will be placed on the strength of their skills, interests and the needs of Tiger Kloof.  Volunteers will be working in the allocated areas in the mornings and be involved in extra mural activities during the afternoon.  They will also be required on an ad hoc basis to assist during weekend activities and integrated programmes (camps) and boarding house duties when required. Each week you will have a full time table mainly at the Pre/Primary school. Your most common duty there will be to listen to reading.  This can be done on one on one basis or in small groups, with a teacher always nearby. During the extramural activities, you will be expected to act as an assistant. You should not be left in charge or expected to run activities alone.  Therefore a teacher will be assigned to the activity you will be in. Outdoor Camps take place during various times of the year.  These camps usually take place during the weekend.  They will hopefully keep you very busy and will involve lots of extra work in the evenings according to the camp programme.  Most of the activities are fantastic and enjoyable so staff volunteers will gain more.
