NEWS  Fourth Term 2010

TEACHING STAFF - There were no staff changes during the third term. There will be a need for a Grade 7 teacher next year as Mrs. Langeveldt is relocating to Cape Town where her husband is working. She is a very dedicated teacher and we are extremely sad to lose her. We have sent in the advertisements for two posts in the Job Mail and Stellalander.

DISCIPLINARY MATTERS - The disciplinary situation has improved considerably. There are few cases which are being handled by the disciplinary committee. When there are serious cases the parents are engaged immediately. It is extremely important that the school and the parents stand together to deal with any disciplinary issues of learners. We thank all parents for their unconditional support.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S POST - The sifting and short listing of the Deputy Principal’s post was done on the 13th of September 2010. Four applicants were shortlisted for the interview. Interviews were conducted on the 22nd of September 2010. The school would like to thank the Board and the SGB for their participation.

GRAHAMSTOWN FESTIVAL - Seventeen Grade 12 learners and two teachers (Ms. Shamabanse, Mr. Chizanga) travelled to Grahamstown to attend the Standard Bank National School Festival at Rhodes University from the 4th to 8th of July. On behalf of the English Department and the SMT, Ms Shamabanse wishes to thank all parents of these learners who have supported their children in order to make this venture a success for them.

HISTORICAL SCHOOL RESTORATION PROJECT - Mr. Arko-Achemfuor and Mr. Zackarias attended the Principal’s conference from July 7th to 9th. The conference was held at Inanda Seminary in Durban. The main facilitator of the conference was Dr. Tim Nuttall from HSRP. Mr. Zackarias indicated that it was a very valuable experience. They were able to mingle with HSRP school principals and share ideas and experiences. Dr. Nuttall was supposed to visit Tiger Kloof during the first week of September. The visit has been postponed to the third week of October 2010.

SCIENCE EXPO - Many of our Tigers (Primary and Secondary) participated in the Science Expo Competitions and proceeded to the Regional and National levels. We are very proud of them and we hope that next year we will have more Tigers representing Tiger Kloof and the Province at National level.

MINI QUIZ - Three of our grade 12 learners participated in a Mini Quiz which was organised by the Potchefstroom campus of the North West University. They obtained certificates.

DEBATE - Tiger Kloof debating team participated in the debate organised by the Department of Transport. The school won the district debate and thus proceeded to represent the District at the Provincial level. The Provincial competition was held on the 20th of August in Klerksdorp - the school obtained position two. The team is proceeding to the National Finals to be held in Cape Town from 27th to 30th of September.

NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK - We had a wonderful focused week of Science from the 2nd to the 6th of August. The district launch of the National Science Week was held at Tiger Kloof and catered for 500 learners and 50 guests. Tiger Kloof was a grant holder. It was wonderfully organised and we thank all educators, learners, finance staff and the kitchen staff for their support.

MAFIKENG FESTIVAL - The grade 11 learners participated in the Mafikeng English Festival from 26th to 27th of August. It was a success and the learners not only enjoyed themselves but they also learnt a lot. Mr. Chizanga and Mrs. Mosimane accompanied the learners to Mafikeng.

ARBOR WEEK AND NATIONAL LITERACY WEEK - Tiger Kloof celebrated Arbor week and National Literacy Week by organising activities and competitions for the learners. We thank Ms. Pieterse for the organisation. The library in conjunction with Mrs. Jordaan arranged a morning tea for adults and children on Saturday, 4 September as part of these celebrations.

BUSINESS STUDIES TRIP - Our Business Studies learners took a trip to Mafikeng. The aim was to gain business experience. They visited private companies like Chopies, Pick ‘n Pay, Seda, Production X and Avalanche. They were accompanied by Mrs. Thupaemang and Mr. Muzirwa. We use this opportunity to thank Mrs. Lydia Moeng for her assiatance.

REMEDIAL PROGRAMME - A remedial programme for Grade 8 and 9 learners is being implemented to bridge the content gap in English and Mathematics. We have limited resources but we are going ahead to address this issue. We might need more resources next year.

UNIFORM - The uniform policy was sent to all parents together with the first term report. All parents need to make sure that their child or children has the right uniform. Please feel free to contact your child’s tutor if you need more clarity. Day learner parents: please make sure that your child is wearing the right uniform every day. Uniform items are available at the uniform shop.

ID DOCUMENTS - Parents are reminded to assist their child or children to apply for an ID if he/she has completed 15 years of age. The extramural coordinator is pleading because learners need ID documents to participate in league matches and fixtures.

PRIZE GIVING - Parents, SGB, Board and other interested parties are once again invited to immortalise their contribution to Tiger Kloof by donating a trophy or trophies or other prizes as an award for learners of the school that will be handed over during the annual prize-giving.

No boarders will be allowed to go home for the weekend of the prize-giving (23 October). Prize-giving will take place on Saturday 23 October at 09:00 in the church at Tiger Kloof. Learners and parents are requested to attend, especially the grade 12 learners as no certificates will be handed out at their Valedictory Service (31 October 2010).

TRANSPORT ARRANGEMENTS FOR DAY LEARNERS - When learners were enrolled at Tiger Kloof it was made very clear to the day learner parents that they must make proper transport arrangements for their children. We do not want any learner to hike to and from the school. Many parents are failing to honour this commitment. All day learner parents must have a proper transport arrangement when we reopen the school in October. We are worried about the safety of our learners. Parents must not compromise safety for saving money.

SPORTS REPORT

Strategy extra mural activity meeting - The sports department is discussing how to continue with the sport and other extra mural activities in 2011. Transport of day scholars and prep sessions for those who are not participating in extra mural activities are two issues which have to be part of those discussions. Choosing for quality or quantity is the other question.

Letters of complaint - We have written a letter of complaint to the Department of Education. It has lead to written warnings to the officials and a visit of one of their officials from Johannesburg to assist the sport officials on the job.

The second letter of complaint went to the Taledi Central Sport Committee. We are requesting them to explain to us what we can expect from them as an organizing sport committee (so far we only saw the athletics and netball being taken up by them) and we’ve asked them about their financing. The committee requests all schools in the Taledi Central cluster to contribute R1500. TK has not paid yet. A third letter of complaint will go to the Westelike Cricket Organization in which we will express our doubts about the road of development they took.

Sport report - Some summer sports as well as Hockey and Netball rolled into the third term to finish their leagues or tournaments. Our hockey girls had their final games at the end of July. Netball should have proceeded towards the provincial best school program, but as in previous years, the Department again failed to organize it.

Cricket did start this term to play trials. In the Primary school TK has 3 players in the “Westelike”, two in the under 12 and one in the under 13 team. The high school was able to deliver one player for the provincial under 18 team.

Soccer had a long winter holiday and will pick up in the fourth term with friendly matches preparing the players for the 2011 season. Basketball, tennis, volleyball and chess didn’t play any league matches due to a lack of teams around us to establish any leagues. As a school we were invited to the launching of the new sport facilities at Mmabatho High. We went with all our sport codes. The tournament was poorly organized and some teams were only given one chance to play.

ROUND SQUARE REPORT

International Understanding

Two learners from Wellington in England visited Tiger Kloof for a week.  They spent time volunteering at the Adrian Losper Soup Kitchen in Colridge and the Emmanuel church Soup Kitchen in Huhudi. They also spent some time helping at our Primary school.

Two students from the Indian School in Oman spent 6 weeks at Tiger Kloof as exchange students. They were involved in the day to day school activities.

We also had two teachers and 4 learners from the Trinity School in the United States, spending two weeks at Tiger Kloof.  The teachers had projects that they ran. One teacher worked within the Primary school on a poetry project.  Another teacher worked with the Grade 9’s on social issues.  The learners were involved in the day to day activities of the school.  One of the learners was involved in a project at the Primary school.

All the above mentioned visits were a success and we have positively strengthened the ties between our schools.

Five girls and two teachers with Mr. Habberton will be attending the International Round Square Conference in Thailand.  The five girls with Mrs. Metsi will depart on the 4th of October for a pre-conference, while Mr. Arko-Achemfuor and Mr. Habberton will depart on the 8th as Mr. Habberton has to attend a board meeting.  They will all return on the 15th of October.

Round Square Activity Group - This group continues to meet every Tuesday and Thursday working on different projects.

International Understanding - The delegation to the RS conference in Thailand is currently raising funds for the Prince Alexander Fund by washing teachers’ cars every Tuesday and Wednesday. In collaboration with the grade 9’s they will be hosting a concert which will also add money to the fund.

Democracy - The group still has to come up with a committee which will steer the activities.  At this moment the grade 11’s are taking the lead.

Environmental Awareness - Learners in this group placed boxes painted in the Round Square colours in strategic places to collect recyclable paper, plastic containers, cans and glass containers. We are also looking into things that can be made with cans and other recyclable materials. We are looking into registering with the Eco-schools so that more can be done within the environment. In our quest to beautify the school, we are repainting the 6 pillars and will make a garden around it.  We will also be painting the white storage room next to the water tower.

Adventure - We are now collaborating with the local Scout Association to help us bring more activities into the Adventure programme.  The scouts will be meeting every Tuesday and Thursday.

Leadership - Currently the grade 11’s are taking the leadership role in most of the activities that we run and most of them are involved in various leadership roles within the school and the boarding house.

Service - Every Tuesday and Thursday we send a group to the Adrian Losper Soup Kitchen.  Every Monday and Friday a group goes to the Emmanuel Church   Soup Kitchen and Wednesday a group goes to help at the Library in Huhudi. The Monday, Wednesday and Friday outings are open to the whole school, while the Tuesday and Thursday are for the activity group.

Two of our learners are spearheading the 1GOAL initiative and we hope that by the end of the year they will have the whole school signed up for this service project.  The aim of 1GOAL is to collect as many signatures of support as possible. Then these signatures will at a 1GOAL summit be given to world leaders who are petitioned to provide education to 71 million children worldwide by 2015.

Slowly but surely we are reaching the goals that we set out to achieve for the activity group.  A lot still has to be done, but we are getting there.

September will be a busy month with …Spring Day,  preparations for both the Pre-Primary and Primary Sports Days being done, thought given to the end of year concert, Staff interviews for posts vacant, along with reports and Parent Interviews scheduled for the weekend of the SGB Annual General Meeting.

PAYMENT OF FEES - Thank you so much to all parents who pay the fees on time and who keep accounts up to date.  Special thanks to those who pay in advance.  Please, all parents who are in arrears with school fees, make the payment of your child’s school fees a priority in your list of responsibilities.  Please do not forget to write your child’s account number, your child’s name and surname and the Grade, as reference on deposit slips.  Please keep all proof of payment and when making an enquiry, bring it along to speed up the process.

NATIONAL SENIOR CERTIFICATE EXAMINATIONS 2010 - This year the NSC examinations started on the 28th of October for our learners and ended on the 3rd of December. All examinations went very well and all managed to be present at the examinations. We are now leaving everything in the hands of God hoping for the best.

CO-CURRUCULAR ACTIVITIES 2011 - In the fourth term we continued for 4 weeks with our extra mural activities. There haven’t been any matches or tournaments in this term. After the four weeks of practice, the afternoons were supposed to be used for preparing for the final examinations in 2010. This gave us the opportunity to prepare our extra mural activities for 2011. The first change which has been made is that we have changed the name from “extra mural activities” to “co-curricular programme”. In changing the name we state the importance of the co-curricular programme. It is an extension of our curriculum in which we should strive for mass participation for the holistic development of our learners. We also changed the sport and cultural activities to sport and cultural clubs. By doing this we cluster several of our old activities into clubs where learners can be members. It is up to the teachers attached to the clubs and the members of the clubs to make it a living club which attracts more learners. The members of the clubs will represent Tiger Kloof in any inter school activities. The last change we made was to enable mass participation to activate our house system. In 2008 we divided our learners in 5 houses: Haile, Willoughby, Lewis, Matthews and Du Toit, the five principals since the start of TK in 1904. Those houses will practice and compete in sport and cultural activities throughout the year. The Wednesday afternoon has been made available for this purpose. It will take a lot of preparation and planning, but we are hopeful that the changes will motivate more learners to take part in the co-curricular programme in order to develop themselves holistically.
