TIGER KLOOF THANKSGIVING

On Friday 15 April, Tiger Kloof Educational Institution held a Celebration Service to thank God for the completion of the renovation of ruined buildings of the former Tiger Kloof into beautiful new facilities for the Pre-Primary, Primary and High School sections of the Tiger Kloof Combined School.

The renovation of the former Girls’ Hostel to house the Primary School has recently been completed after work began in 2005 to convert former dormitories into new classrooms for each successive primary year group. The last dormitory to be converted has been transformed into a science laboratory. Ex-Tiger Mrs Sebitloane, grandmother of a current Tiger Kloof primary learner, declared: “This room used to be my dormitory! When we became seniors we moved to a dormitory upstairs.  It is wonderful to see Tiger Kloof come back to life”

The house formerly used by the London Missionary Society’s appointed Head of the Girls’ School has been converted into the Tiger Kloof Pre-Primary School, and a former garage on the high school campus has been turned into a Geography classroom.

Ceremonies performed on the day included the blessing of the facilities by Reverend Tong of the Anglican community in Huhudi, and the occasion was graced by the presence of representatives from the Solon Foundation, main sponsor of the primary school renovations, and SANLAM, sponsors of the renovation in the high school.  P D Habberton

TOP 10 PERFORMERS

Term 1 Grade 8 to 12 - A few years ago we introduced the TOP TEN badges for grade 8 to 12 for every term. This has improved the spirit of competition among the learners. We have already identified the TOP TENS in all grades for the first term. We will hopefully announce it on the 13th of April. We will try and send the list of the TOP TEN learners in every grade at a later stage.

Leonora Baatlhodi & Thandi Metsi

TEACHING STAFF

Mrs. L Baatlhodi, Mrs. T Metsi and Mr A Arko left Tiger Kloof at the end of the first term, 2011. The two ladies are now subject specialists with the Department of Education and Mr. Arko is now currently working for the University of South Africa (UNISA). Congratulations to them and we are surely going to miss you. May God bless you in your new posts. Mr.T Cogang was appointed to teach Setswana and Economic Management Sciences in Grade 8 and 9. We also appointed Mrs. A Gani to teach Grade 5, Mrs. G du Toit to teach grade 7 and Mr. E Cilliers to teach grade 8 and 9 Natural Science.

NEWS  First Term 2011     Click here for 2010 News

SCHOOL DAYS APRIL 28TH AND 29TH - All parents are informed about the swapping of the school days, April 28th and 29th with June 16th and 17th. The reason for this arrangement is because these two working days are falling in between two long weekends. It is too expensive for the boarder parents to transport boarders home twice if we don’t make this special arrangement. The SMT requested permission from the Area Office to swap these two school days and the permission is granted.

GRADE 12 RESULTS 2010 - In the Grade 12 National Senior Certificate Examination we got 96% pass. More than 50% of our learners qualified for Bachelors Degree pass. We have 28 distinctions in different learning areas. I thank all the educators especially grade 12 educators for their consistent effort to achieve this wonderful result.

GRADE 12 CAMP - All the grade 12 learners attended a leadership camp at Rustenburg from the 10th to 13th of February. We used Spirit of Adventure again this year for this camp. It was very challenging and the learners enjoyed it very much.

GRADE 8 CAMP - All grade 8 learners had a successful orientation camp at Tiger Kloof. All learners enjoyed the camp and it was a wonderful opportunity for them to know more about Tiger Kloof and its history. We thank Mr. Ferris, all other staff members, volunteers and mentors for their assistance.

ENGLISH FESTIVAL - Grade 11 English festival of the arts is going to take place at the International School of South Africa in Mafikeng from April 19th to 20th. The learners will leave on the morning of 19 April and come back on the afternoon of 20 April.

BISHOP’S SCHOOL EXCHANGE - Four Grade 10 learners and Mr. Jenami spent a week at Bishop’s in Cape Town as part of our exchange programme between Bishop’s and Tiger Kloof.

GRADE 3 ASSESSMENTS - Quality Improvement, Development, Support and Upliftment Programme(QIDS UP) had a Grade 3 National Benchmarking Assessment. Tiger Kloof results were the second highest in the sample of schools in the province and the top school in the sample from the Taledi Area Office. We congratulate all the Primary Department staff on the very pleasing results.

PARENT TUTOR MEETING - Our first parent tutor meeting was held on the 26th of February. We had a parent turnout of approximately 63%We are really worried about the non attendance of some parents. We thank all the parents who attended the meeting. All parents need to attend these meetings without fail. Parents who are called by the tutors/subject teachers should do well to come and meet the teachers for interventions. Parents who see poor performance of their children should make arrangements to meet teachers/tutor as soon as possible. Parents should talk to their children about conflict resolution. Learners are resorting to violence to resolve conflict at school. Please strongly advise your child to refrain from violence at school.

USE OF CELL PHONES - Learners are strictly not allowed to use cell phones at school from 7 o’clock in the morning to 4 o’clock in the afternoon. If learners are found in possession of cell phones at school it will be confiscated immediately. We anticipate the cooperation of the parents in this regard.

WELLINGTON COLLEGE AND WINDERMERE SCHOOL VISIT - We had educators and learners from the above mentioned schools from England to do service in our community. They were partnered with our educators and learners to do community service. Service was done at Thusanang Disabled Centre, the two soup kitchens with which we are involved, and the pre-primary school. It was a wonderful experience for all of us. We thank Mrs. Top for her hard work and time.

VISIT OF HEAD OF WELLINGTON COLLEGE - Dr. Anthony Seldon Head of Wellington College spent two days with us and discussions were held with regard to ways to strengthen our partnership with Wellington College.

JUNIOR ROUND SQUARE CONFERENCE - Three Grade 9 learners accompanied by Mr. Baloyi attended the Junior Regional Round Square Conference at St George’s Diocesan School in Windhoek, Namibia.

TRINITY TIGER KLOOF EXCHANGE PROGRAMME - Congratulations to Karabo Ditibane, Lusanda Nobanda, Palesa Mpholo and Dimpho Keretetse who will represent Tiger Kloof  at Trinity School in New York, USA, during the first two weeks of April. This exchange visit forms part of a partnership which started a couple of years ago. Mrs. C. Top and Mrs. I. Labuschagne will accompany them to New York.

LEADERSHIP WEEKEND - Ms. Pieterse organised a successful Leadership weekend for the executive members of the RCL, the RS Committee, the Library Monitors and the Boarding House, as well as a weekend training camp for library monitors and the library monitor Exco.

NATIONAL SUPPLEMENTARY TUITION PROGRAMME - We are very pleased to inform you that Tiger Kloof is one of the three schools in the province to offer supplementary tuition for Physical Science and Mathematics learners. The programme is sponsored by the SAMF. We would like you to encourage your child to attend these lessons on Saturdays from 8:00 to 12:30. A time table is given to all Physical Science and Mathematics learners. Parents need to arrange the transport and also to ensure the attendance of their children. Many of our learners are failing to attend these lessons.

LIBRARY MONITORS - This year we have 49 library monitors from grade 9 to 11 that are helping the media centre manager to run the library and prepare library material as well as put up displays and run competitions for library week. The library monitors were trained at a camp held on 22 January 2011. At this training camp/workshop, the 7 members of the library monitor executive committee were chosen. On Friday 28th and Saturday 29th January the Exco members were work shopped in their duties and expectations for 2011.

LIBRARY WEEK - Library week as well as the history of Tiger Kloof was celebrated during the weeks of 7 to 18 March 2011. Competitions were run for learners with the help of Mr. Chizanga, Mrs. Maliehe-Arko, Mr. Jenami and Mrs. Olivier. Mrs. Jordaan and the grade 12 Hospitality class served a morning cocktail party for the teachers, administration staff, Principal and Rector as the highlight of the library week on Friday 11 March.

TIGORIANS - The History club (Tigorians) is currently working on finishing up the displays in the museum as well as a project to design and develop a brochure about the history of Tiger Kloof.

PRIZE GIVING - Parents and other interested parties are once again invited to immortalise their contribution to Tiger Kloof by donating a trophy or trophies or other prizes as an award for learners of the school that will be handed over during the annual prize-giving that will take place during October. For more information on categories or possible awards, please contact the Chairperson of the Prize-giving committee, Ms. C. Pieterse.

ROUND SQUARE REPORT - The year started off busy, with one of our aims being the repainting of the pillars.  We managed to complete this with the help of the Primary School Round Square Committee.

The following is a summary of what happened under the Round Square banner this term: Windermere and Wellington College came to Tiger Kloof in order to provide service to the Colridge and Huhudi Communities.  They also did some work at our own pre-primary.

Four of our learners and 1 teacher went on exchange to Bishop’s College in Cape Town.  In addition to attending lessons, they went up Table Mountain, visited Robben Island and spent some time at the beach.

The Junior Round Square Conference took place in Namibia.  We sent three learners and one teacher to represent us.  The theme of the conference was, “We survive together”.

60 learners have registered to be part of the Round Square activity groups, which meet from Monday to Thursday.  As a result of this, Round Square is growing and more learners are starting to live the philosophy.

SPORTS REPORT

CO CURRICULAR PROGRAMME REPORT

Changes are coming with resistance (and confusion). The co-curricular programme (afternoon programme) had some changes this year. In order to have more learners occupied in activities in the afternoon, we planned the senior sport and the junior cultural in one session, twice a week and the other way around on the remaining two afternoons. The good news is that it showed a remarkable decrease in the number of learners in Prep (compulsory homework) during the activity time and the time table is one hour shorter for the senior learners and teachers.  But it took 3 weeks before everyone was used to the new time table and the new responsibilities and the grade 12’s are not able to participate every day because of their extra classes. We will evaluate the changes we’ve made to see if the pros are up to the cons. If not, we might have to look for other changes or go back to the old system.

Wanted: Sports coaches - Tiger Kloof is looking for parents, uncles, aunts, friends, old students, etc., who are passionate about one of our sport codes, willing to learn how to train a sport code and eager to work with one of our sports teams. We have vacancies in the Netball, Hockey and Soccer departments. Please feel free to have a chat with the head of sports, Mr. Klaas-Jan Top.

Athletics - The first term starts every year with athletics. This year we participated with 20 learners on cluster level, 8 went on to the regional levels where we didn’t manage to continue to provincial level.

Soccer - Soccer played its first tournament in the U18 age group, the Coca Cola Cup. Our cluster started to play late, which led to us not being able to send our cluster winner to the regional finals.  Our cluster final was planned on the same day as the regional final. Tiger Kloof was in the cluster final. The final was never played because of the above mentioned reasons.

Basketball - Our senior Basketball team went once to Taung and once to Vryburg for friendly games. The teams they have visited also paid a visit back. So far they’ve won all their games.

Hockey - Our hockey teams played friendlies against Vryburg High and Colinda Secondary Schools. The senior teams lost all their games, the junior won 3 and lost 1.

Cricket - Our cricket teams have practiced hard but didn’t compete yet.

Vryburg High School sports day - Our U18 and U14 soccer teams and all our Netball teams participated in the Vryburg High annual sports day. Our U18 soccer team went to the finals and had to recognize the better one in their opponent. The U14 team never played because of bad time management. Our senior Netball teams were in the A league which seemed to be too hard as they lost all their matches. Our U15 team won some and lost some and our U14 team won all their matches.

SA games - The Department of Sport and Culture decided to have the SA games combined with the MEC Cup. This brought some confusion in the selectors department in the participating sport codes. Cricket went on for the SA games and selected their squad for the provincial team. 8 Tigers are part of this squad. Netball played the Cup and selections took place while playing. 4 Tigers are part of this squad and Soccer decided to send the winning team to the provincial SA games. The Naledi squad did not win the provincial tournament so we won’t have Tigers to represent us in the provincial soccer squad.

MATHEMATICS OLYMPIAD - A hundred learners wrote the Olympiad, organised by the South African Mathematics Foundation, sponsored by Harmony Gold Mining Co Ltd.

GRAHAMSTOWN FESTIVAL - A reminder to parents of grade12 learners who are selected to attend the Grade 12 National Schools Festival in Grahamstown, that payment for the excursion should be made by the 31st of May 2011.

LEBONE II COLLEGE OF THE ROYAL BAFOKENG - We were invited for the opening of the Lebone II College of Royal Bafokeng at Rustenburg. It was a wonderful function. Lebone II school is an independent school and it has made its mark in education. There is so much to learn from this school. M. and Mrs. Habberton and Mr. Zackarias attended the function on behalf of the school and institution.
